What is Kinesio Taping?
Kinesio taping is a therapeutic technique that uses elastic tape to enhance the function of various tissues and physiological systems. By applying the tape in different ways, it can produce unique effects to aid in recovery and improve movement. Kinesio tape can be applied at any stage of treatment, including acute, sub-acute, rehabilitative, and chronic phases.
The History of Kinesio Taping
Kinesio taping first gained major recognition during the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Since then, it has been utilized by world-renowned athletes such as Kevin Garnett, David Beckham, Serena Williams, and Rory McIlroy. However, while athletes have helped popularize kinesio taping, it’s important to note that **85% of kinesio taping users are non-athletes**.
How Kinesio Taping Works
The elastic and soft nature of kinesio tape makes it distinct from traditional, rigid athletic taping. Early in my career, I gained experience with standard athletic taping methods, as well as the more limited McConnell and Mulligan taping techniques. Kinesio taping, on the other hand, allows for a full range of motion while assisting the body in correcting movement patterns.
Kinesio tape helps the body return to homeostasis (a state of balance) by gently supporting muscles, joints, and tissues. It is:
- Hypoallergenic and Latex-Free
- Similar in weight and thickness to human skin
- Made of 100% cotton and elastic fibers
- Applied with a heat-activated adhesive
- Durable and water-resistant, lasting **3-5 days**, even in the shower
Unlike common misconceptions, kinesio tape does not contain medication. The tape’s benefits are mechanical, aiding the body’s natural healing process.
Benefits of Kinesio Taping
Kinesio taping offers numerous benefits, including:
- Muscle Support: Facilitates or inhibits muscles to promote healthy movement patterns.
- Pain Relief: Reduces pressure on pain receptors to alleviate discomfort.
- Improved Circulation: Enhances blood and lymphatic flow, reducing inflammation and swelling.
- Tissue Decompression: Relieves tension in ligaments, tendons, and fascia.
Kinesio tape can help treat conditions such as:
- Muscle imbalances
- Postural insufficiencies
- Circulatory and lymphatic issues
- Ligament, tendon, and joint injuries
- Fascial adhesions and scars
- Neurological conditions
Common Conditions Treated with Kinesio Tape
Kinesio taping is commonly used to treat a variety of injuries and conditions, including:
- Achilles tendonitis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Shoulder instability
- Bursitis
- Headaches
- Shin splints
- Plantar fasciitis
- Low back pain
- Patellar tendonitis
