How we can help.

Low back pain is one of the most common complaints among golfers. Golf is a high-velocity rotary sport that creates increased forces through the lower back, shoulders, hips, neck, ankles and wrists. This can cause pain and discomfort even among the best golfers in the world.

Are you one of the many golfers who suffer from low back pain? How can you get back to playing pain-free golf?

A common pattern of muscle dysfunction we see in golfers is what’s known as the lower crossed syndrome. This is where a group of weak muscles combine forces with a group of overactive or tight muscles to create a potentially dangerous motion pattern in the low back. This can lead to low back pain and injury.

For example, if you sit at a desk for eight hours a day, your hip flexor muscles will shorten and become tight. This will shut down your gluteal (butt) muscles. Since your gluteal muscles are not working properly, your body will use the muscles in the backs of your legs (hamstrings) and your lower back to help with hip extension. In other words, you will use muscles in a way that nature and physiology did not intend.

Lower crossed syndrome is easy to eliminate. The CGFI at Arizona Orthopedic Physical Therapy (AZOPT) will teach you special stretches to lengthen your hip flexors and lower back muscles. He’ll teach you specific exercises to strengthen your abdominals and gluteal muscles. After those muscle imbalances are corrected, he’ll help you develop a more stable, more neutral lower back posture. Other services of our golf program include:

  • Individual screening & identification of limiting physical factors using video analysis
  • Prescribing customized drills & special exercise to eliminate physical limitations & faulty swing mechanics
  • Expert care for golf-specific injuries (elbow, back, neck, hips, etc.)
  • Help returning to golf after an injury or surgery
  • Training to help you play at your desired level
